Lake Manyara NP

Where Forest Meets Rift and Flamingos Paint the Horizon

Iconic Behavior

Tree-Climbing Lions

Birding

~430 Species (Flamingo Flocks)

Setting

Gregory Rift Valley Wall

Size

~330 km² (Compact)

Landscape & Ecological Microcosm

Ground-water Forest

Evergreen canopy fed by springs; home to blue monkeys and large baboon troops. Located near Mto wa Mbu.

Alkaline Lake & Floodplain

Habitat for flamingos, pelicans, and hippos. Water depth is shallow (≤ 3 m average) and fluctuates seasonally.

Rift Escarpment & Hot Springs

Towering cliffs rising 600 m (panoramic look-outs). Southern reach features steaming alkaline Maji Moto (hot springs).

Within an hour’s drive you pass forest → grassland → marsh → lake edge → escarpment — ideal for interpretive guiding.

Wildlife Highlights & Seasonality

Key Species Focus

  • Tree-climbing Lions: Iconic behavior, observed mainly in the south around Maji Moto.
  • Primates: Highest biomass density of baboons in Africa; blue monkeys in the forest.
  • Elephants: Recovering population (~400–600), best viewed in the riverine forest and plains.
  • Birds: ~430 species, including flamingos, pelicans, and the African spoonbill.
  • Hippos: Easily seen at the Hippo Pool boardwalk.

Seasonal Notes

Season Months Experience
Dry Jun–Oct Animals concentrate on lake shore; visibility excellent.
Green Nov–May Lush forest; great birding and hippo sightings.
Peak Birds Jan–Mar Mass flamingo flocks due to water level fluctuations.
Fun Fact: The park inspired Ernest Hemingway’s description of “the loveliest I had seen in Africa.”

Activities & Operational Notes

Signature Activities

  • Game Drives: Ideal for ½-day circuits, perfect for arrival/departure days.
  • Treetop Walkway: ~370 m canopy bridge (highest in East Africa) near the entrance.
  • Night Game Drives: Permitted under special TANAPA authorization (19:00–23:00) for nocturnal species.
  • Canoeing: Seasonal on the lake for close views of pelicans and hippos.

Access & Guiding Notes

  • Access: Road transfer from Arusha (~2 h) or Manyara Airstrip (~45 min flight).
  • Photography: Focus on early light in the forest (soft diffusion) and afternoon escarpment light.
  • Conduct: Strictly no off-road driving, no feeding baboons, and no drones.
  • Lodging: Options include Manyara Serena Lodge (on rim) and various camps near the Mto wa Mbu gate.

Geology & Best Pairings

  • Geology: Soda alkaline lake fed by underground springs from Ngorongoro aquifers. Active Gregory Rift fault zone.
  • Pairing 1: Tarangire NP (1–2 h drive) for contrast between forest and open savannah (elephants).
  • Pairing 2: Ngorongoro Crater for incredible density and crater depth after lake horizons.
  • Extension: Chemka Hot Springs en-route to Moshi for relaxation.
