Mount Meru: The Volcano & Its Ecosystem

Meru is a stunning, elegant stratovolcano located right in the heart of Arusha National Park. Standing at 4,566m, it is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and is often referred to as the "Silent Brother" of Kilimanjaro, which is clearly visible from its upper slopes.

The mountain's topography is defined by its massive caldera, which exploded approximately 7,800 years ago, leaving a dramatic Crescent-shaped crater and the steep, sheer cliffs of the Ash Cone inside. The trek takes you directly through this incredible landscape.

Summit Height: 4,566m (Socialist Peak)
Best Duration: 3 or 4 days (3 days is fast, 4 days highly recommended)

The Dramatic Crater & Ash Cone

Trek & Safari Combined

Meru is the only major Tanzanian trek where you are guaranteed wildlife sightings on the trail.

The lower slopes of Meru pass through lush montane rainforest, home to rich fauna. Due to the active wildlife in Arusha National Park, all trekking groups are escorted by an armed ranger from the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA).

Ranger Escort

Mandatory on Day 1 to ensure safe passage through the forest zone.

Wildlife

Look out for Buffalo, Giraffes, Warthogs, and the endemic Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys.

"The trail from Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut is a walking safari in itself, where you might see elephants grazing near the path."

Acclimatization & Planning Essentials

Pre-Kili Preparation

Meru is highly recommended as a warm-up climb for Kilimanjaro. Its 4,566m summit provides excellent altitude exposure, helping your body prepare for the higher elevation of Kili, significantly boosting your summit chances.

  • Higher success rate on Kili due to prior altitude exposure.
  • Tests gear and fitness before the main event.

Accommodation & Gear

Unlike most routes on Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru treks utilize dedicated, solid mountain huts (Miriakamba and Saddle Hut). This provides more comfort and shelter from the elements.

  • Hut Accommodation: No camping required.
  • Porters: Mandatory, as per TANAPA rules.
  • Park Gate: Momella Gate is the sole entry point.

Ideal Climbing Seasons

The best periods mirror those for Kilimanjaro, ensuring clearer skies and better trail conditions.

Dry Season 1: June – October
Dry Season 2: December – February

Avoid the heavy rains of April and May.
